Toronto, ON (December 15, 2011) – With the Fall Television Season now complete, a fall ratings report card indicates that CTV and CTV Two have increased their number of Top 20 hits over last year, powering the networks in growing their lead over their competitors. Data from BBM Canada from the end of the Fall Season (Dec. 11) confirms that CTV has widened the gap with its next closest competitor, Global, among key demos and in key markets. Meanwhile, as first seen earlier this fall, CTV Two continues to lead Citytv in total viewers nationally and in Vancouver, where it also leads among A18-49 and A18-34.
A look back at the past 12 weeks on Canadian television shows that CTV ends the Fall Season firmly at the top of the charts in all genres, and with a resounding four of the Top 5 most-watched programs in the country. Additionally, CTV has delivered a season full of break-out hits, with a clean sweep of the Top 6 new programs in the country, and with five new programs landing in the Top 20 for A25-54 and A18-49.
Hot on the heels of Bell Media’s announcement of its acquisition of the new Charlie Sheen comedy ANGER MANAGEMENT, and in advance of the return of HOT IN CLEVELAND to CTV in the new year, it is clear that comedies have had a monster Fall Season on CTV. Canada’s most-watched program, THE BIG BANG THEORY, actually grew its already massive audience by 20% among total viewers and A25-54, to end the Fall Season with an astonishing average audience of 3.8 million viewers. Meanwhile, TWO AND A HALF MEN has seen double-digit growth of 62% for A18-49 and 53% for A25-54, climbing into the Top 10 with adult demos. Additionally, Emmy-favourite MIKE & MOLLY has seen similar growth of 64% for A18-49 and 59% for A25-54 in its second season. Along with break-out hit WHITNEY, the four programs are the Top 4 most-watched comedy series in Canada for total viewers, A25-54 and A18-49.
A closer look at the Fall Season reveals that:
Bell Media Delivers Canada’s Largest Primetime Audiences
• Nationally, CTV has increased its lead over Global in A18-49 to 58%, widening the gap by five percentage points over last fall. The gap grew 12 percentage points among A18-34, increasing to a 47% lead over Global.
• Locally, CTV has widened the gap between itself and Global with all key adult demos. In Toronto, CTV now leads by 55% and 61% with A25-54 and A18-49. In Vancouver, CTV now leads by 24% and 26% with the same demos, growing the gap by 10 and 20 percentage points respectively.
• Sister network CTV Two has overtaken Citytv to become the fourth-ranked network in Canada. Nationally, CTV Two leads Citytv by 9%. CTV Two also leads Citytv in Vancouver by 7% with total viewers, A18-49 and A25-54.
